[Feature or NewProject] We need more functionality by virtualization: VMware/Proxmox + run ISO/IMG/VHD/VMDK #81

Description

Problem Statement

Launching the main virtual machine with the necessary software suite installed on it, as is currently the case, or the ability to run containers — all of this is good, but it doesn’t solve the problem of running various ISOs or ready‑made, fully functional other virtual machines from past backups of other systems.

Proposed Solution

It is necessary to provide the capability/tool to launch and create the “basic virtual machine in relation to podroid” itself from ISO / IMG / VHD / VMDK files.
I see two options for solving the problem:

  1. Ideally, it would be possible to choose what to boot from directly in the program.
  2. Initially, install any hypervisor: Proxmox or VMware, so that you can then carry out all experiments and work in it in the usual way, i.e., using familiar, simple actions such as creating nested virtual machines, cloning and backing them up, etc.

Alternatives Considered

As an alternative, you can also implement a new project based on Podroid using your own efforts or by providing a detailed description of what and how needs to be changed in your code in order to compile Podroid yourself — either one that can work in hypervisor mode from the outset or one that allows running ISO/IMG/VHD/VMDK image files from other systems.

Use Case

Using the main Podroid virtual machine for certain tasks is not very suitable, as it requires a lot of setup work and involves complexities with backups and synchronization. Using containers, especially when there are many of them, requires orchestration and also complicates things. Therefore, switching to a hypervisor would be much more convenient and easier to use.
