Register Filesystem Locations

This is an interesting idea. Instead of fixed locations in the file system one could register "virtual locations" which map to real locations.

What would be the advantage of this? I am not sure there is one really. One could always create environment variables and use those. In fact, it might be a good idea to support environment variable substiutions in the environment config files.

Anyway, it something to consider.
