Custom Background color

Is there a way to set custom background color?

I tried
self.keyboardControls.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor];
but nothing happened

try:
_keyboardControls.barTintColor = [UIColor blackColor];
_keyboardControls.barStyle = UIBarStyleBlackOpaque;

worked for me.
