{ label: "Ultimo decennio", value: "+11,3%", note: "reale annuo, luglio 2016–luglio 2026" }
],

context: "Over the ten years ending in July 2026, US equities delivered an average real return of 11.3% per year, compared with a historical median of 7.0%. At the same time, the Shiller CAPE reached 39.5, placing market valuations in the 98.5th percentile of observations since 1881. The project looks at how US equities have performed after similarly elevated valuations and asks whether the returns of the past decade provide a reasonable benchmark for the next ten years. Since there is only one completed historical episode with a CAPE close to 40, during the dot com bubble, the analysis expands the sample to all observations in the highest CAPE decile. This threshold begins at 28.2 and provides 66 overlapping ten year periods for the analysis.",
approach: "The analysis measures real total returns over one, three, five and ten years following observations in the highest CAPE decile. It then uses three regression models to estimate returns over the subsequent decade based on CAPE, inverse CAPE and the Excess CAPE Yield. Because many of the historical periods overlap, a moving block bootstrap is used to account for the resulting dependence between observations. The analysis also includes an event study of six major valuation peaks, comparing the returns, maximum drawdowns and recovery times that followed each episode.",

results: "Historically, high CAPE levels have not necessarily been followed by immediate market losses, with the median real return after one year still reaching 9.9% within the highest valuation decile. Over a ten year period, however, the evidence becomes less favourable. The median real return falls to negative 0.4%, while 55% of the periods end with a real loss. The three regression models also point to expected returns below the 11.3% achieved over the most recent decade. Their estimates differ considerably, however, and the uncertainty around them remains too large to support a precise forecast.",
limitations: "The main limitation is the small number of genuinely independent historical precedents, as only one completed episode in the dataset reached a CAPE close to 40. Broadening the sample produces 66 ten year periods, but these observations overlap and therefore cannot be treated as separate historical experiments. The results are best interpreted as evidence of how valuations and subsequent returns have been related in the past, rather than as a precise forecast of future market performance.",

context: "Pension funds and ETFs provide two different ways to build wealth for retirement, each with its own advantages and trade offs. A pension fund offers tax benefits, may include an employer contribution and can provide a lifetime income, although access to the accumulated capital is more restricted. An ETF offers greater flexibility and allows the remaining wealth to be passed on to heirs, but it does not provide the same tax advantages or protect against the risk of exhausting the portfolio during retirement. A meaningful comparison therefore needs to consider not only investment returns, but also income, employment conditions, severance pay and the length of retirement.",
approach: "The model follows both strategies from the beginning of the saving period through retirement, applying the tax rules and payout structure that apply to each. Under the pension fund strategy, employee contributions and Italian severance pay, known as TFR, are paid into the fund. Under the ETF strategy, the same amount paid directly by the employee is invested in the portfolio, while TFR remains with the employer. The analysis compares both the income received during retirement and the wealth left to heirs, allowing the pension fund annuity and the ETF portfolio to be evaluated over the same period. The assumptions used in the model are based on institutional data, product terms and the legislation currently in force.",

results: "Employer contributions make the pension fund more attractive in many of the scenarios considered, while a shorter retirement generally leaves a larger share of the ETF portfolio available to heirs. The outcome also changes with income and the age at which contributions begin, which can shift the relative advantage from one strategy to the other. Rather than identifying one option as universally better, the model shows the conditions under which each approach produces the more favourable outcome. Full results will be published after the thesis defence in October 2026.",
limitations: "The model assumes constant returns and does not include inflation, while the effect of the sequence of returns is examined separately. During retirement, the capital is assumed to be invested in government bonds with short maturities, so market fluctuations are not included in this stage of the simulation. Early withdrawals are considered in the discussion but are not modelled, while full redemption is excluded from the analysis. Tax treatment reflects the rules in force in 2026 and may therefore change over time.",

The human component comes from a prediction market in which 72 participants choose among several possible price ranges, while the AI component produces a separate probability distribution from historical data. The two forecasts are then combined to determine which price range emerges as the most likely outcome.",
approach: "Claude Code was used as the main development environment, with TimesFM from Google DeepMind integrated as the time series forecasting model. TimesFM uses the most recent 1,024 days of Bitcoin prices to generate a point forecast for 2030. At such a long horizon, however, its prediction intervals collapse, so uncertainty is reconstructed from the historical volatility of Bitcoin returns and allocated across five price ranges. The resulting distribution is then adjusted using ten structural factors documented in the project archive, including regulation, ETF demand and the halving cycle, with each factor translated into a likelihood ratio. In the final step, the adjusted AI distribution is combined with the prediction market distribution using equal weights in log odds space.",

It assigns 28.0% to the same range and places 40.4% below 75 thousand dollars. Once the two forecasts are combined with equal weights, the range preferred by participants remains the most likely outcome, although its probability falls to 66%. The final distribution assigns a further 15% below 75 thousand dollars, 14% between 150 and 275 thousand, and the remaining 5% above 275 thousand.",
limitations: "The likelihood ratios assigned to the ten structural factors are based on informed judgement rather than estimates derived directly from data, so different assumptions would lead to a different distribution. The final combination also brings together forecasts built from different sources of information and should not be interpreted as a single statistical model. The human component comes from an eighteen day exercise with no real money at stake, meaning that the 86.6% concentration in one range may partly reflect participants converging on similar expectations rather than forming fully independent views. TimesFM relies only on historical prices, while the forecast extends more than four and a half years into the future, so the final distribution is best understood as a scenario conditional on the chosen assumptions rather than a calibrated estimate of Bitcoin’s future price.",

The relationship is difficult to identify directly because aid is often sent to countries that are already experiencing instability. Nunn and Qian address this problem by exploiting changes in US wheat production from the previous year together with differences in each country’s historical exposure to food aid. This project reconstructs their empirical strategy using the original data and then extends the analysis to examine whether the estimated effect of aid depends on the political institutions of the recipient country.",
approach: "The replication rebuilds the original 2SLS specification using the same panel, sample, fixed effects and controls as the published study. The extension introduces political institutions to test whether the effect of food aid differs across more autocratic and more democratic settings. Both aid and its interaction with institutional quality are treated as endogenous and are therefore instrumented, while institutional quality also enters the model separately. Robustness checks vary both the measure of political institutions and the period in which they are observed. A single script produces all tables and figures and verifies the consistency of the results, making the full analysis reproducible.",

results: "The replication recovers the positive relationship between food aid and civil conflict reported in the original study, while the placebo test for conflict between states continues to show no effect. In the extension, the point estimate suggests that the impact of aid may become weaker as political institutions become more democratic, but the interaction is estimated too imprecisely to establish a reliable difference across regimes. The conclusion remains unchanged when institutional quality is measured at different points in time or defined using alternative indicators. The binary measure used in the original paper leads to the same result and provides no clear evidence of heterogeneity. Overall, the analysis reproduces the published average effect but does not find sufficiently strong evidence that it differs between autocracies and democracies.",
limitations: "The original identification strategy combines changes in US wheat production with differences in countries’ historical exposure to food aid, but this approach has been criticised because it may also capture trends that differ across countries. Successfully reproducing the published estimate confirms that the original result can be recovered from the data, but it does not by itself establish that the exclusion restriction is valid. Political institutions may also respond to civil conflict, so measuring them before the conflict period helps reduce reverse causality while changing the effect being estimated. The instruments used for the interaction are also relatively weak, which makes inference depend more heavily on a test that remains valid under weak identification and still cannot rule out a zero effect. Finally, the data cover historical US wheat aid in a specific sample of countries, so the findings should not be extended directly to all forms of humanitarian assistance.",

The thesis explores this question through eVISO, a listed energy company that uses its own artificial intelligence platform for forecasting and market operations. AI therefore has a dual role in the project, as it is both part of the company’s operations and the tool used to analyse its financial statements. The aim is to assess whether automation can make financial analysis faster and more efficient while preserving the human judgement needed to select relevant information, choose appropriate methods and interpret the results.",
approach: "The analysis first introduces the main financial statements, reclassification methods and ratios used to assess profitability, capital structure and financial position. These tools are then applied to eVISO for 2021 and 2022, using the reclassified statements published by the company to calculate eleven financial ratios. ChatGPT is separately given the 2022 and 2023 reports and asked to assess the company’s performance, financial position and capital structure. In 2026, the traditional analysis was extended to 2023 and a Python script was developed to verify the sixteen results originally produced by GPT-4o, using the same financial years and clearly defined formulas. This makes it possible to distinguish genuine calculation errors from differences that arise when the model selects a different formula or analytical approach.",

results: "Between 2021 and 2022, eVISO nearly tripled its revenue but moved from a profit to a net loss, despite remaining profitable at the operating level. The 2026 review shows that GPT-4o produces the same value as the independent calculation in ten of sixteen cases across 2022 and 2023, although some of these ratios were already reported in the documents provided to the model. Three differences are explained by the denominator selected for ROS and capital turnover, meaning they reflect alternative definitions rather than calculation errors. A more significant issue appears in the debt ratio, where the model considers only long term liabilities and therefore describes the company as having relatively low debt. Once current liabilities are included, total liabilities exceed equity by more than two and a half times, leading to a substantially different interpretation. One liquidity figure also cannot be reproduced from the available data. Overall, the model performs most consistently when both the inputs and the formula are clearly defined, while reliability declines when it must independently choose and justify the appropriate analytical method.",
limitations: "The findings are based on a single company and cannot be generalised to financial statement analysis as a whole, particularly because eVISO has relatively simple accounts and carries no inventory. Some of the ratios requested from GPT-4o were also already included in the reports it received, making it difficult to determine whether the model calculated them independently or extracted the published values. A more controlled comparison would therefore rely only on the statutory financial statements or use a company that does not publish the ratios being tested. The analysis also reflects the capabilities of the model available when the thesis was written, while the 2026 extension uses more advanced tools to make each calculation transparent, verifiable and reproducible.",
