Control of notification display while app is open

On ios, we make use of the setting:

FirebasePushNotificationManager.CurrentNotificationPresentationOption = None/Alert

...to turn off display of notifications, in some situations, while the app is open.

Is there a way to do this on Android (without using a custom handler)?
