RPC gRPC Module - Future Enhancements

Scope

  • hardening and refinement of gRPC plugin runtime behavior
  • deterministic reliability improvements for lifecycle/credentials/stream paths
  • stronger benchmark-backed guardrails for gRPC WAL-apply hot path

Design Constraints

  • plugin contracts remain backward compatible within major release line.
  • TLS/mTLS and registration outcomes remain explicit and deterministic.
  • degraded/reload fault paths remain observable and non-silent.
  • metrics/log outputs remain actionable for runtime triage.

Required Interfaces

Interface Requirement
lifecycle interfaces deterministic init/start/stop/reload semantics
credential interfaces fail-closed TLS/mTLS handling with explicit failures
service interfaces stable service registration and activation contracts
observability interfaces method-level metrics and structured log visibility

Implementation Notes

  • tighten parity between credential reload and active-service safety checks.
  • standardize diagnostics for lifecycle/registration/stream incident classes.
  • expand resilience tests for prolonged RPC traffic and reload churn.
  • broaden benchmark depth for additional gRPC transport workflows.

Test Strategy

  • unit and integration suites for lifecycle, credentials, registration, and stream adapter behavior.
  • regressions for malformed credential bundles and registration failures.
  • deterministic stress runs for long-running RPC traffic with reload events.
  • release-profile benchmark runs for mapped WAL-apply gRPC targets.

Performance Targets

  • gRPC plugin hot paths remain inside regression budgets.
  • WAL-apply and service-lifecycle-sensitive operations remain stable at p95/p99 envelopes.
  • mapped benchmark manifests reach no-missing-case status for release gating.

Security / Reliability

  • maintain strict validation before TLS/mTLS activation and reload application.
  • preserve explicit failure signaling for lifecycle/credential/registration faults.
  • enforce bounded behavior under sustained and bursty RPC workloads.
  • keep diagnostics actionable for production transport incidents.
