dwm - dynamic window manager
============================
dwm is an extremely fast, small, and dynamic window manager for X.
This is a personal fork of dwm 6.8 with a custom tagging model: tags are a
dynamic, resizable set (not the fixed 1-9 of stock dwm) that can be created,
removed, reordered and swapped at runtime, and windows can additionally be
browsed grouped by WM_CLASS instead of by tag. See CLAUDE.md for the details
of both systems and config.def.h for the resulting keybindings, which differ
substantially from stock dwm's. dwm.1 still documents the stock behavior and
is out of date for this fork.
Requirements
------------
In order to build dwm you need the Xlib header files.
Installation
------------
Edit config.mk to match your local setup (dwm is installed into
the /usr/local namespace by default).
Afterwards enter the following command to build and install dwm (if
necessary as root):
make clean install
config.h is generated from config.def.h only if it doesn't already exist, so
after editing config.def.h run `rm config.h` (or `make clean`) before
rebuilding, or your changes will be silently ignored.
To run the tag-bitmask arithmetic regression test (no X11 required):
make test
Running dwm
-----------
Add the following line to your .xinitrc to start dwm using startx:
exec dwm
In order to connect dwm to a specific display, make sure that
the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, e.g.:
DISPLAY=foo.bar:1 exec dwm
(This will start dwm on display :1 of the host foo.bar.)
In order to display status info in the bar, you can do something
like this in your .xinitrc:
while xsetroot -name "`date` `uptime | sed 's/.*,//'`"
do
sleep 1
done &
exec dwm
Configuration
-------------
The configuration of dwm is done by creating a custom config.h
and (re)compiling the source code.
