When your ship is shot down, it leaves a wreck with salvage (a cargo box). Other pilots can collect it, but you never can, not even after the killer's 30-second head start. You respawn near your base's station, so if you died close by you come back right next to your own wreck and can't collect it. Players read that as a stuck box.
What 0.4.0 does
The rule stays the same, but the game now says so:
- The box's hover card is titled Your wreck and shows a lock line: "Only other pilots can salvage it".
- Clicking it still flies you there, and shows "That's your wreck: only other pilots can salvage it".
Why the rule exists (server)
- Respawning is free.
- Wreck salvage is made from nothing; it isn't taken from your inventory.
- Salvage is limited to one box per ship every 5 minutes.
So if you could collect your own wreck, dying on purpose next to the station would pay.
Question
Should a pilot be able to recover their own wreck, for example once the killer's 30-second window is over? Things to weigh:
- Farming: dying on purpose next to the station would pay. The salvage could be reduced for the owner, or taken from the pilot's own cargo instead of made from nothing.
- Other pilots: after the killer's window, others can already take it.
- Respawn at base (0.4.0): you land on your company's base map by default, so you'll meet your wreck less often when you die elsewhere.
Found while checking a player report ("a box that someone else collected, after I respawn, I still see and can't collect"). It turned out to be the player's own wreck, not a stale box: boxes others collect disappear correctly, whether you're dead, just respawned or on another map.
